The Crib – Small Shelter Design for Weekend Retreat

Inspired by the award-winning Shack at Hinkle Farm, by Broadhurst Architects, Inc., the Crib TM is a multi-purpose small shelter with myriad function ranging from a weekend retreat, a home yoga studio, a backyard home office, to cabins. An interesting aspect is the material of which this crib made. Going along with the growing spirit of environmentalism, it utilizes recyclable material that can be transported and assembled on site. The Crib, in its form, is of a traditional American corn crib. The structural system employs a modern approach with a hint of traditionality which is reflected by combination of shop-fabricated galvanized steel and a wood timber framing with simplicity of a scaffolding system. The Crib

Simplicity is an additional feature of The Crib in which a 250 square foot habitable space suitable for many kind of use such as weekend retreat, backyard, studio, or guest cottage. Many kind of heating systems are applicable. A small propane-fired stainless steel fireplace, an electric or hydronic radiant floor system, solar hot water and photovoltaic can be integrated into the structure. For safety, wood shutters secure any ground-level openings; an awning swings down to form a storm door to cover the glass door/wall, and the aluminum stair system hinges up off of the ground and locks in an inaccessible position.
